Demand Grows for NHTSA to Regulate Collision Avoidance Technology

February 20, 2015 by Megan Headley

The staggering increase in truck collisions in recent years could be slowed if the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration makes forward-collision avoidance and mitigation braking (F-CAM) technology a standard feature of trucks 10,000 pounds and up, claims a group of safety advocates.

In a petition for rulemaking filed with NHTSA, the Truck Safety Coalition, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, the Center for Auto Safety, and Road Safe America state that more than 1,600 of annual truck-related fatalities involve the front-end crashes that F-CAM technology prevents.

According to the petition, most manufacturers are already installing technology that can alert truckers to both moving and stopped vehicles — but drivers don’t have the data needed to understand which systems are truly effective.

Given that the petition cites NHTSA’s research on the big benefits of F-CAM, regulations for this technology are likely in store.
