Pickup trucks have become more buttoned-up as customers look for higher trim levels on their favorite models and Ram Trucks has responded by introducing new designer threads.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will launch the 2018 Ram Limited Tungsten Edition in the third quarter of this year. Tungsten Edition models will be the highest level available across the Ram Trucks lineup of light-duty and heavy-duty pickups, and will be priced from $55,120.

“This is the most luxurious truck we have ever offered, and I would say it is the most luxurious truck in the marketplace today,” said Jim Morrison, head of Ram Trucks North America.

The 2018 Ram Limited Tungsten Edition is priced at $2,245 more than the Ram Limited, formerly the brand’s top trim with a starting suggested retail price of $52,875. The new model takes standard equipment from the Limited and adds a host of interior materials and exterior accents.

The Tungsten Edition will feature a suede headliner, which Ram says is a segment-first. Ultra-premium leather seats, steering wheel, center arm rest, doors and instrument panel are standard. The seats are both cooled and heated. Rubber floor mats are standard, and carpeted inserts can be snapped into place when desired. Accent stitching and real wood elements finish the look.

On the outside, the new trim employs a brushed chrome look – inspired by the trending use of tungsten carbide for men’s ring and jewelry – on the front grille, side sill accents, tailgate badging, tailpipe tips and wheels. Light-duty 1500 models will feature a standard sport hood with large dual ducts.

Luxurious amenities are not new to the pickup trucks market. The Tungsten Edition joins luxury pickup trucks such as the Ford F-150 Limited, Chevrolet Silverado High Country and GMC Sierra Denali as the highest-level trucks on the market.

Automakers have discovered a consumer appetite for expensive trucks. The average transaction price for full-size pickups increased by more than 20 percent from 2012 until the end of 2016, outpacing the industry average, according to market research firm J.D. Power. Through the first five months of 2017, sales of large pickups have increased by 4.4 percent to more than 919,000 compared with the same period a year earlier, according to industry research firm Autodata Corp.

The Tungsten Edition trim is available on Ram 1500 models as well as heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 trucks. Customers can choose from two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, and short bed or long bed configurations. Air suspension, a backup camera and an 8.4-inch UConnect system with Apply CarPlay and Android Auto are standard equipment.
