The all-new Volvo XC40 compact crossover made its official debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week and introduces several firsts for the Swedish automaker.

The 2019 XC40 is the smallest SUV in the Volvo lineup. It is the first vehicle to ride on the Compact Modular Architecture platform. And it is the first Volvo available for a subscription service at $600 per month for two years.

The service, called Care by Volvo, is similar to models launched recently by Cadillac, Lincoln and Porsche.

Customers can sign up for 24 months of Care by Volvo and receive an XC40, a Liberty Mutual insurance policy, maintenance, service, tire protection and roadside assistance. It also comes with the Volvo Concierge app that allows owners to order servicing, refueling and valet service direct from their smartphones.

After 12 months, customers can change cars and renew the subscription for another two years.

Volvo plans to use the XC40’s Compact Modular Architecture platform to introduce new models—some with electric powertrains. The XC40 itself will feature a hybrid option and a fully-electric variant in the future.

The XC40 has similar styling to its larger XC60 and XC90 siblings. The recognizable “Thor’s hammer” headlights lead a clean and classic Scandinavian design.

“It represents a fresh, creative and distinctive new member of the Volvo line-up,” said Håkan Samuelsson, chief executive of Volvo.

The XC40 is aimed at city drivers. Standard equipment includes a 9-inch touchscreen compatible with Apply CarPlay and Android Auto and four years of the Volvo On Call emergency system.

The automaker’s highly-regarded City Safety technology is also included. The system provides automatic emergency braking with pedestrian, cyclist, vehicle and large animal detection.

The XC40 comes with all-wheel drive and is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It is priced from $35,200.

A front-wheel drive version will go on sale in summer 2018. It will boast a smaller engine. Pricing starts from $33,200.

The 2019 Volvo XC40 will be available in Spring 2018 for purchase, lease or subscription.
