2020 Ram HD Pickup Trucks: Here’s What We Know

December 11, 2018 by Ryan ZumMallen, @Zoomy575M

The race to launch new heavy-duty pickup trucks is on.

Ford is testing the next generation of its F-250 and F-350 Super Duty. General Motors recently showed the styling of its all-new 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD models ahead of a 2019 debut.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles may be first to launch with its new extra-capable truck, the 2020 Ram HD. It will come in 2500 and 3500 models and is closely related to the all-new 2018 Ram 1500 light-duty truck that debuted earlier this year.

The all-new 2020 Ram HD truck is expected to debut in January at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Here’s everything we know about the 2020 Ram HD pickup truck:

What do the 2020 Ram HD models look like?

The 2020 Ram HD is styled like a bigger, beefier version of current Ram HD models. Buyers will find the lines and body design familiar but with more pronounced muscle. The truck also borrows headlight and taillight design from the new Ram 1500 light-duty pickup.

Some versions of the current Ram HD trucks use the traditional “crosshair” grille design, while others adopt a centered Ram badge and dual nostrils on either side. For the 2020 version, all Ram HD models will lose the crosshair in favor of the centered Ram badge.

What trim options will the 2020 Ram HD have?

The 2020 Ram HD will carry the same trim lines as the current truck. The base version, the Tradesman, is followed by the SLT and Laramie. Midlevel trims include the Big Horn and Laramie Longhorn. At the top of the lineup is the Ram HD Limited, which is also available as a Limited MegaCab with additional space for rear passengers.

The off-road variant is called the Power Wagon. It will be available in multiple trim levels.

What engine choices will the 2020 Ram HD have?

We don’t know what changes FCA will make to the powertrain in the 2020 Ram HD. The current trucks come with a variety of engines. There is a 5.7-liter V8 with 383 horsepower and a 6.4-liter V8 with 410 horsepower. A 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel six-cylinder comes in three different power levels, topping out at 930 pound-feet of torque. Ford and Chevrolet both offer more than 900 pound-feet in their heavy-duty models, too. FCA may bump up the power in that proven engine in an attempt to claim class-best figures.

Can the 2020 Ram HD go off-road?

Heavy-duty pickup trucks are typically not the off-road vehicle of choice for most adventurers. While the rugged frames and torquey engines are beneficial, in most cases they are too large and heavy for mud or tight trails.

Ram’s answer to that is the Power Wagon. The Power Wagon is a famous nameplate known for its capability in difficult terrain. Photographers spotted the new 2020 Ram Power Wagon, and images show it will retain the lifted suspension, off-road tires and integrated winch that have endeared it to buyers in the segment. The new Power Wagon should also come standard with locking front and rear differentials and a front anti-roll bar disconnect.

What does the interior of the 2020 Ram HD look like?

Spy shots that captured the 2020 Ram HD in the Laramie trim show a modern evolution of the current truck with influence from the fashionable new Ram 1500.

The 2020 Ram HD prototype sported an 8.4-inch touchscreen using the latest version of FCA’s Uconnect infotainment system. The new 2020 Ram HD also is expected to offer the massive 12-inch touchscreen with SiriusXM 360L that debuted on the Ram 1500 this year.

The Laramie pictured has heated and cooled seats and a heated steering wheel. Higher trims should come with styling features such as ornate stitching and etching on gauges, as well as belt buckles covering pouches on the back of the front seats. Current versions of the Ram HD are available with holding spaces in the floor of the back seat; the 2020 could implement innovative storage solutions introduced on the new Ram 1500.

Where will the 2020 Ram HD be built?

The 2020 Ram HD will be produced at FCA’s facility in Warren, Mich. Previous versions were built in Saltillo, Mexico.

When will the 2020 Ram HD go on sale?

The 2020 Ram HD is expected to go on sale in the second or third quarter of 2019.

Good to see Fiat Chrysler bring production back to the U.S. unlike it cross town rival that would like to increase production in Mexico. Hopefully they take away sales from General Motors who we bailed out less than 10 years ago and then they turn around and kick us in the face with all these plant closures and leave Mexico untouched. I Really Hate this company and I hope the public wakes up and quits supporting GM.

I currently have a 2017 Ram 1500 Big Horn and I’m hoping for a few more exterior color options for 2020 as my current lease ends in March of next year. Any chance we could see a few different variations in the blue, or green, or even brown tones? What are the chances we could even see something again in varieties of orange? I’ve had trucks in the dark metallic (gray) the past few years as well as trucks that were either dark red, patriot blue, or black and I would love to see some variety offered in the near future.

Ram 1500 “regular cab” is non-existant–2019. Will they make a regular cab in 2020?????
I have a 2017 short bed, reg cab, 6 cyl, 4×2, with the 8 speed, damn thing gets 28-32MPG on the highway with cruise control set at 65. (bed cover adds 1-2mpg) Makes a great personal vehicle for those over 60yrs that have no use for cars.

Are you guys going to come up with a bigger motor? I’ve had two rams in my life, a 2012 ram slot fully loaded with 35s inch tires and 4 inch suspension lift and flowmaster exhaust muffler. And I got a brand new ram big horn in 2015 redid the exaust with again flowmaster. I’ve notice that Ford has the same size motor now and so there little faster and GMC is way better and is on top with pulling power. So what’s next with us the ram. Plz tell me you guys are coming out with something crazy cuz I want a new truck again soon thx Vezina_24@hotmail.com
