Daimler Trucks North America will recall a variety of its Freightliner, Western Star and Sterling Acterra trucks to fix a problem with their brakes.
The recall covers 741 vehicles. They include the 2004-2019 Freightliner 108SD, 114SD, 122SD, Cascadia, Columbia, Classic, FL80, FLD 120SD, Business Class M2 vehicles. It also includes Western Star 4700, 4900, 6900, Sterling Acterra, L7500, LT7500, L8500, LT8500, L9500, and LT9500 trucks.
Daimler said the vehicles might not have enough service brake air reservoir capacity. They fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 121, which covers air brake systems.
The combined volume of all service reservoirs and supply reservoirs must be at least 12 times that of all service brake chambers. A low ratio could reduce braking if several applications are required over a short period of time. That could lead to a crash.
Dealers will correct the problem by adding additional air reserves to the vehicles.
Daimler will launch the recall July 12. Owners may contact Daimler’s customer service at 1-800-547-0712. The company’s tracking number for the recall is FL-81.
