Yakima Outpost HD Rack
Yakima Products added to its wide range of versatile racks by unveiling three new truck-specific rack systems at the SEMA Show. While the Outpost HD, Overhaul HD and BedRock HD offer slightly different designs, the Outpost HD appears to be the most accessible. With variable T-slot attachments, BedGrip clamps, 500-pound road capacity and a sturdy aluminum construction, this $500 truck rack is good for a wide range of outdoor activities.
Westin’s HDX LED Grille for Jeep JK and JL
Westin Automotive debuted a new version of its HDX LED Grille for Jeep JL and JKs at the SEMA show. A form-fitted mesh grille, the HDX features a row of LED lights used for spot or flood lighting, with cutouts for stock headlights. Installation requires zero drilling and, for an added touch, a laser-cut Westin logo adorns the top. The grille’s housing is made of 16-gauge steel. Westin plans on releasing the grille before the end of the year.
Napier Outdoors Backroadz Truck Bed Tent
Napier Outdoors will offer an updated version of its Backroadz tent for pickup truck beds called the Series 19. The redesigned tent adds built-in storm flaps, gear pockets and lantern holders. The Backroadz Series 19 is available in more sizes to fit the larger beds in new trucks. It starts at $199.99, presenting a value alternative to rooftop tents that often cost thousands of dollars. Napier is aiming to release the Backroadz Series 19 in February 2019.
Kanati Armor Hog ATX Tire
Greenball’s new Kanati Armor Hog ATX tire is the brand’s first to use a 12-ply-rated, all-steel body. This improves a truck’s capacity for large payloads and heavy-duty towing while adding stability and increasing durability. The Armor Hog ATX boosts traction for off-road driving, and its steel body reduces the risk of punctures. Greenball says it will reveal pricing in March, when the Armor Hog ATX releases.
Thule’s Evo Family of Rack Systems
Thule’s upcoming Evo family of roof racks won’t be fully available until 2021, but the brand unveiled the first wave at the SEMA auto accessories and gear show in Las Vegas. Called the Evo Clamp (for vehicles with no rails) and Evo Raised Rail, the system lets users choose a variety of load bar options depending on what they’re hauling. Its design offers a large loading area no matter the accessory or cross bar. The system releases in early 2019.
Coros Smart Helmets for Bikers
Sports technology company Coros unveiled three new smart cycling helmets that provide tech features including SOS emergency alerts when they detect crashes. The Safesound Road ($200), Safesound Mountain (releasing in December) and Safesound Urban ($180) feature a built-in headphone, the company’s SafeSound Fit System, an integrated LED taillight and a handlebar-mounted smart remote that controls incoming calls and audio playback.
Tuffy’s Rear Under-Seat Lockbox
Tuffy Security Products now offers rear under-seat lockboxes for 2019 GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado pickup trucks. The Tuffy boxes use 16-gauge powder-coated steel and 1/8-inch welded steel components. Each is outfitted with the company’s Pry-Guard locking system. The lockboxes fit to the backseats on the Sierra and Silverado and are shielded from view when each truck’s split bench seats are lowered.
A.R.E. Accessories Tear Drop Camper Shells
Pickup owners often attach boxy camper shells to their truck beds for greater cargo capacity and security. The Q-Series, a concept shell from A.R.E. Accessories, adds a teardrop shape and black rear pillar to create a dynamic, “floating roof” appearance. The company is considering production of the shell aimed at young adventurers who prefer a sleek look with potential fuel economy savings.
Baja Designs Laser-Based Vehicle Light Bar
One of the leaders in off-road lights, Baja Designs, is looking to lasers for the future. Baja Designs unveiled its OnX6 Laser, a 10-inch light bar it says offers 350 percent more distance than a comparable LED bar. A handful of professional off-road racers will use the OnX6 Laser in the vaunted Baja 1000 endurance race in November. The OnX6 starts at $999.95. Baja Designs plans to integrate the technology into its smaller XL series lights soon.
Hi-Lift Jack Hood Mount for Jeep Wrangler JL
For the new-generation Jeep Wrangler, the Hi-Lift Jack Co. has created new hood mounts to safely carry its heavy-duty jacks. Hi-Lift lowered the height of its former hood mount by 1.5 inches and angled its position to reduce wind noise and vibration. The Wrangler is the only vehicle for which Hi-Lift makes a specific mount, speaking to its popularity in the off-road community. The mount starts at $88.99 and is available now.
AVS Aeroskin LightShield Hood Protector
The AVS Aeroskin LightShield won the 2018 Best New Exterior Accessory award at the SEMA auto accessories and gear show in Las Vegas. The hood protector won praise for its seamless integration into pickup truck hoods. Amber LED marker lights – required on vehicles over 80 inches wide – install easily into the factory parking lights while providing protection for the paint and hood. Shipping begins in January 2019.
Pirelli Tire Scorpion All-Terrain Plus
Pirelli is looking to expand to the off-road market. Pirelli developed the Scorpion All-Terrain Plus specifically for North America, seeing an opportunity to support growing demand for SUVs and pickup trucks. The tire is designed with aggressive tread for off-road travel without sacrificing driving comfort or fuel economy. It is available in sizes up to 315 mm in width and can fit up to 22-inch wheels.
Seasucker Monkey Bars
Drivers who want to carry gear and equipment but do not have roof rails on their vehicle can install the Seasucker Monkey Bars, which mount to the roof with suction cups. The bars are available as a single piece or as a folding two-piece for easy storage. The system starts at $450. Also new is a universal fork mount for all Seasucker bicycle racks. The once optional accessory is now standard.
BAK Industries Revolver X4 Truck Bed Cover
BAK Industries’ newest pickup truck bed cover is the Revolver X4. Its design and construction are the same as the company’s popular X2, but the X4 comes in a matte black color. The trend of matte black – as opposed to a shinier gloss – swept through the SEMA auto accessories and gear show in Las Vegas this year, especially in pickup truck equipment. The Revolver X4 is available now and costs about $800-$1,000, depending on vehicle model.
